„RG Index“ ergänzt optimiertes bisheriges Ranking

Liebe Roundnet-Community, 

in den vergangenen Wochen und Monaten haben wir im Hintergrund fieberhaft daran gearbeitet, unser aktuelles Ranking zu optimieren. Dabei haben wir einige Schwachpunkte erkannt, die wir nun mit zwei Maßnahmen verbessern wollen: 

1. Optimierung des bisherigen Rankings

Bis jetzt wurden die Punkte für die reine Endplatzierung bei einem Turnier einfach endlos aufaddiert. Da dies aber vor allem die häufige Teilnahme an Turnieren belohnt und wir aufgrund der Corona-Pandemie und dem starken Andrang bei Turnieren nicht erwarten können, dass ihr alle immer bei allen Turnieren am Start sein könnt, haben wir uns für folgende Optimierungen entschieden:

1. Der Zeitraum der German Roundnet Tour und damit der Ranking-Zeitraum wird auf ein Kalenderjahr gesetzt, also aktuell vom 01.01.2022 bis zum 31.12.2022.
2. Es werden pro Spieler*in nur die besten sechs Turnierergebnisse ins Ranking übernommen. Als “beste Turnierergebnisse” sind die höchsten erreichten Punktzahlen definiert, nicht die besten Platzierungen. Für das Teamranking gilt dasselbe. 
3. Für alle Kategorien (Mixed, Damen, Herren) gilt ab jetzt das gleiche System. 
4. Die Mindestanzahl an Teams pro Turnier bzw. Division wird auf 8 gesenkt. 
5. Um die Divisions innerhalb dieses Systems einbeziehen zu können, gilt folgende Abstufung der Punkteskala:

• Pro/Advanced Division: 100% der Punkte
• Intermediate Division: 40% der Punkte
• Beginner Division: 10% der Punkte

Die Aufteilung in leistungsbezogene Divisions soll perspektivisch auf Basis des RG Index erfolgen. Da dieser derzeit jedoch noch keine aussagekräftige Eingruppierung zulässt, verbleiben die Divisions zunächst auf Basis der eigenen, subjektiven Eingruppierung. Als Orientierung kann das Skill-Level Tool.

2. Einführung eines neuen Rankings – auf Basis des neuen „RG Index„

Das aktuelle Ranking fördert – auch nach der Änderung – durch das Aufaddieren von Ergebnissen vor allem die häufige Teilnahme an Turnieren und spiegelt zudem mit seiner Fokussierung auf die reine Endposition in einem Turnier (vor allem bei Systemen wie dem Doppel K.O.) die Performance des Teams über den gesamten Turnierverlauf nicht zwangsläufig fair wieder. Deshalb braucht es aus unserer Sicht ein System, dass nicht die Quantität der Turnierteilnahmen honoriert, sondern vor allem die Qualität, also die Performance in jedem einzelnen Spiel.  

Das neue Ranking definiert sich dementsprechend dementsprechend nicht mehr über die Addition der je nach Turnierplatzierung erhaltenen Punkte, sondern dem sogenannten RG Index (Roundnet Germany Index, kurz RGX). Der größte Unterschied liegt dabei darin, dass jedes einzelne Spiel innerhalb eines Turniers zur Berechnung des RG Index herangezogen wird. Der RG Index ist dabei ein statistischer Wert, welcher die Spielstärke einer Person (bzw. zusammenaddiert eines Teams) berechnet und wiedergibt. Dabei wird pro Spiel sowohl die Spielstärke des eigenen Teams, als auch die des gegnerischen Teams mit einbezogen. 

Ausführliche Informationen mit der konkreten Berechnungsformel, Beispielen und ausführlichen FAQ findet ihr hier auf der Übersichtsseite des Rankings. Zudem haben wir euch einen Calculator gebaut, in dem ihr verschiedene Beispiele selbstständig durchrechnen könnt.

Wie geht es jetzt weiter?

In der Übergangs- und Testphase des Jahres 2022 werden beide Rankings parallel zueinander laufen. Wir glauben, dass der neue RG Index ein großes Potential hat und ein echter Mehrwert für die Roundnet Community sein kann. Wir sind uns aber auch zwei Sachen bewusst:

1. Es wird trotz der Nutzung der Daten aus 2021 als Grundlage eine Weile dauern, bis genügend Daten vorhanden sind, damit das neue Ranking wirklich aussagekräftig ist und zum Beispiel für Setzlisten oder die Einteilung in Divisions verwendet werden kann.
2. Es wurde im Roundnet noch nie ein derartiges System verwendet, daher ist es möglich, dass sich einzelne Eigenschaften und Parameter als nicht optimal für z. B. das aktuell typische Turniergeschehen oder auch die Behandlung von Mixed-Spielen herausstellen. Dies werden wir beobachten und ggf. kontinuierlich Anpassungen vornehmen.

Aus diesen Gründen haben wir uns gegen eine sofortige Einführung und für eine Test- und Feedbackphase entschieden, und hoffen dabei auch auf viele Meinungen und Feedback aus der Community, um dann im nächsten Jahr hoffentlich ein ausgereiftes Ranking einführen zu können.

Dear coundnet community, 

in the past weeks and months we have been working in the background to optimize our current ranking system with great effort. In the process, we have identified some weak points, which we want to improve with two measures now: 

1 Optimization of the previous ranking.

Until now, the points for the pure final ranking at a tournament were simply added up endlessly. But since this mainly rewards the frequent participation in tournaments – and due to the Corona pandemic and the heavy rush at tournaments – we can’t expect that all of you can always get a starting place at all tournaments, we decided for the following optimizations:

1. The period of the German Roundnet Tour and thus the ranking period is set to one calendar year, currently from 01.01.2022 to 31.12.2022.
2. Only the best 6 tournament results per player will be included in the ranking. The „best tournament results“ are defined as the highest achieved scores, not the best finale placements. The same applies to the team ranking. 
3. For all categories (Mixed, Women, Men) the same system applies from now on. 
4. The minimum number of teams per tournament or division will be reduced to 8. 
5. To be able to include the performance-related divisions within this system, the following gradation of the point scale applies:

• Pro/Advanced Division: 100% of the points.
• Intermediate Division: 40% of the points
• Beginner Division: 10% of the points

In the future, the performance-related divisions will be divided on the basis of the RG Index (RGX). However, since the RGX does not yet permit any meaningful grouping, the divisions will initially remain on the basis of their own subjective grouping. The Skill Level Tool can be used as a guide.

2 Introduction of a new ranking – based on the new RG Index

The current ranking encourages does not necessarily reflect the performance of the team over the whole tournament course in a fair way – by adding up results mainly the frequent participation in tournaments and furthermore with its focus on the pure final position in a tournament (especially in systems like double knockout) it. Therefore, in our opinion, a system is needed that does not reward the quantity of tournament participations, but rather the quality, i.e. the performance in each individual match.  

Accordingly, the new ranking is no longer defined by an addition of points for a certain performance in a tournament, but by the so-called RG Index (Roundnet Germany Index, RGX for short). The biggest difference is that every single match within a tournament is used to calculate the RG Index. The RG Index is a statistical value, which calculates and reflects the playing strength of a person (or added together of a team). For each match, the strength of the own team as well as the strength of the opposing team is included. 

Detailed information with the specific calculation formula and examples can be found here in the FAQ. In addition, we have built a calculator for you to work through various examples on your own.

What happens next?

In the transition and test phase of 2022, both rankings will run parallel to each other. We believe that the new RG Index has great potential and can be a real added value for the roundnet community. However, we are also aware of two things:

1. It will take a while, despite the use of the 2021 data as a basis, to have enough data for the new ranking to be really meaningful and to be used for example for seedings or divisioning.
2. There has never been such a system used in Roundnet before, so it is possible that individual properties and parameters turn out to be not optimal for e.g. the currently typical tournament action or also the treatment of mixed matches. We will observe this and make continuous adjustments if necessary.

For these reasons we decided against an immediate introduction and for a test and feedback phase, and hope thereby also for many opinions and feedback from the community, in order to be able to introduce then hopefully in the next year a matured Ranking.
