Viele kennen sich in der deutschen Roundnet Community bereits bestens aus, aber weißt du auch wie es jenseits der deutschen Grenzen aussieht? Wir ermöglichen den Blick über den Tellerrand auch ohne stundenlang durch Social Media scrollen zu müssen. Monatlich veröffentlichen wir einen kurzen Newsletter, in dem die wichtigsten Ereignisse in der Welt des Roundnets in Schlagzeilen zusammengefasst werden. Wenn dir etwas auffällt, was in dieser Zusammenstellung noch fehlt oder auf keinen Fall in der nächsten Ausgabe fehlen darf, melde dich gerne beim Referat Internationales (international@roundnetgermany.de).
Planungen für die EM nehmen Form an:
Die Anmeldung für die Europameisterschaft in Dublin ist nun bereits für die Länderteams geöffnet. Wie wir bereits berichteten, wird es bei den Männern auch eine geschlossene Division geben. Jedes Land kann dafür ein Team nominieren. Die restlichen Teams setzen sich aus den bestplatzierten Teams der EURA Grand Slams zusammen. Sollten Plätze übrig bleiben, so rücken die Teams entsprechend des EURA Rankings nach.
Das Seeding Komitee für die WM steht fest:
Ein dreiköpfiges Team der IRF wird dafür verantwortlich sein die Nationalteams für die WM möglichst objektiv zu bewerten, um eine entsprechend faire Gruppenaufteilung zu ermöglichen. Das Team besteht aus Amely Joy aus Frankreich, Ben Dantowitz aus den USA und Cristobal Schweitzer aus Chile.
EURA Grand Slam in Riga – Deutsche Damen holen den Sieg:
Der nächste EURA Grand Slam ist vorüber und damit ist bereits die Hälfte der Tour Series gespielt. Auf den EURA Tour Stops besteht die Möglichkeit sich für die Pro-Division bei der EM zu qualifizieren. Alexa Peusch und Saskia Benter haben diese Chance genutzt und können nun die deutsche Roundnet Community in der höchsten Division in Dublin vertreten. In einem stark besetzten Turnierfeld setzten sie sich im Halbfinale in drei Sätzen gegen das österreichische Spitzenteam “Tiramisu” durch und dann im Finale gegen “Curly Fries”.
Auch im Mixed war Alexa, zusammen mit dem US-Amerikaner Tommy Drake, erfolgreich und musste sich lediglich im Finale gegen Nelson und Megan geschlagen geben. Dritter wurde Dani zusammen mit Rafael (beide ebenfalls aus Österreich).
Bei den Herren konnten Nelson und Benni das Finale gegen die belgischen Vizemeister “Hustling Brothers” gewinnen. Mit diesen starken Platzierungen setzt Österreich ein Ausrufezeichen in Richtung WM. Dritter wurde das deutsche Team “MRC Future Tapken/Popluhar”.
Die neue Spitze des Roundnets in den USA
Alte Hasen, die schon länger Teil der Roundnet Szene sind, werden sich noch an die Ära von “CS” – Cisek/Showalter erinnern können. Bis zur Covid Pause dominierten sie das Roundnet Geschehen in den USA und konnten gleich drei Mal hintereinander die nationale Meisterschaft gewinnen. Das Team “Boysterous” (Prestion Bies und Caleb Heck) hat sich insbesondere 2019 als größter Konkurrent etabliert, sodass sich zwischen den Teams eine regelrechte Rivalität entwickelt hat. Als 2021 wieder eine durchgehende Saison in den USA gespielt werden konnte, hatte sich “CS” bereits in den Ruhestand verabschiedet. Showalter bleibt der Roundnet Community jedoch als Nationalcoach der USA erhalten. “Boysterous” konnte trotz eines respektablen Ergebnis (4. Platz) bei den letztjährigen Nationals nicht an die hohen Erwartungen anknüpfen.
In der diesjährigen, noch jungen Saison entwickelt sich eine neue Rivalität. Die Spieler sind jedoch keineswegs neue Gesichter in der Roundnet Welt. “Double Clutch”, bestehend aus den beiden Texanern Frederic Hinkle und Rahul Murthy, haben 2021 die Nationals in einem knappen Spiel für sich entscheiden können und sind daher auch in die Saison 2022 als Favorit gestartet. Größter Widersacher ist “Assistive Touch” (Clark Marshall und Buddy Hammon). Marshall war die letzten Jahren mit Andrew Card als “Trippy Lizard” in der Pro Szene unterwegs, konnte jedoch nie den ganz großen Erfolg landen. Buddy Hammon ist ein Roundnet Urgestein, der bereits vor der CS Ära aktiv und sehr erfolgreich war. Wegen mangelnder Möglichkeiten in der Defense kehrte er der Roundnet Szene den Rücken zu. Erst mit der Einführung der No-Hit-Zone fand er wieder Interesse an dem Sport und schnell Anschluss an der Pro-Szene. Wegen einer Verletzung von Card war auch Marshall ohne Partner, sodass sich das Team Anfang letzter Saison zusammenfand und da auch bereits “Double Clutch” im Finale eines Turniers in Kalifornien schlagen konnte. Bei den Nationals belegten sie den dritten Platz.
Fünf Mal sind die Teams bisher aufeinander getroffen und das fast immer im Finale. Auch beim ersten “Major” Turnier dieser Saison in San Francisco hieß das Finale “Double Clutch” gegen “Assistive Touch”. Das Matchup gewinnt Tiefe durch die unterschiedlichen Spielweisen und den Größenunterschied der Teams. Murthy und Hinkle sind beide eher kleiner und verlassen sich vor allem auf ihre kraftvollen Aufschläge, während “Assistive Touch” sich als Defense-Team versteht. In San Francisco konnte sich erneut “Double Clutch” durchsetzen, sodass es im totalen Vergleich nun 3:2 steht. Auf weitere Begegnungen beider im Verlaufe der Saison dürfen wir also gespannt sein.
Auch bei den Damen gibt es einen neuen Stern am Roundnet Himmel. In den letzten Jahren dominierten die “Twinz”, Olivia und Ali Jenki, die Damen-Turniere nahezu nach belieben. In dieser Saison macht jedoch das Team “Biggie Smalls” auf sich aufmerksam. Der Teamname spielt hier auf den Größenunterschied zwischen den beiden Teampartnerinnen an. In einem knappen Finale konnten Alli Foster und Katie Pierson auch das Major Turnier in San Francisco gewinnen. Letztes Jahr standen sich die beiden noch im Viertelfinale der Nationals gegenüber und dieses Jahr haben sie als neu formiertes Team nun die letzten drei Turniere der Tour Series gewonnen. Das große Aufeinandertreffen mit den Twinz steht noch aus und dann wird sich zeigen, ob “Biggie Smalls” den Thron streitig machen kann.

Qualification for European Championship:
Registration for the European Championship in Dublin is now already open for country teams. As we already reported, there will also be a closed men’s division. Each country can nominate one team for this. The remaining teams will be composed of the best placed teams of the EURA Grand Slams. If there are any places left, the teams will move up according to the EURA ranking.
The seeding committee for Worlds has been determined:
A three-person team from the IRF will be responsible for evaluating the national teams for the World Championships as objectively as possible to ensure a fair group seeding. The team consists of Amely Joy from France, Ben Dantowitz from the USA and Cristobal Schweitzer from Chile.
EURA Grand Slam in Riga – German women take the victory:
The next EURA Grand Slam is over and so already half of the Tour Series is played. At the EURA Tour Stops there is the possibility to qualify for the Pro Division at the European Championships. Alexa Peusch and Saskia Benter took this chance and can now represent the German Roundnet Community in the highest division in Dublin. In a strong tournament field they beat the Austrian top team „Tiramisu“ in three sets in the semifinals and then „Curly Fries“ in the final.
Alexa was also successful in Mixed, together with the US-American Tommy Drake, and only had to admit defeat in the final against Nelson and Megan. Third place went to Dani together with Rafael (both also from Austria).
In the men’s competition Nelson and Benni won the final against the Belgian runners-up „Hustling Brothers“. With these strong placings, Austria is already setting an exclamation mark towards the World Championships. Third place went to the German team „MRC Future Tapken/Popluhar“.
The new top of the Roundnet in the USA
Old hands who have been part of the Roundnet scene for a while will still remember the era of „CS“ – Cisek/Showalter. Until the Covid break they dominated the Roundnet scene in the USA and won the national championship three times in a row. Team „Boysterous“ (Prestion Bies and Caleb Heck) established themselves as the biggest competitors, especially in 2019, so that a real rivalry developed between the teams. By the time a continuous season could be played in the USA again in 2021, „CS“ had already retired. Showalter, however, will remain with the Roundnet community as USA national coach. „Boysterous“ was unable to live up to the high expectations despite a respectable result (4th place) at last year’s Nationals.
A new rivalry is developing in this year’s young season. However, the players are by no means new faces in the Roundnet world. „Double Clutch“, consisting of the two Texans Frederic Hinkle and Rahul Murthy, were able to win the Nationals in a close game in 2021 and therefore also started the 2022 season as favorites. The biggest opponent is „Assistive Touch“ (Clark Marshall and Buddy Hammon). Marshall was the last years with Andrew Card as „Trippy Lizard“ in the Pro scene, but could never land the big success. Buddy Hammon is a Roundnet veteran who was already active and very successful before the CS era. Because of the lack of possibilities in the defense he turned his back to the Roundnet scene. Only with the introduction of the No-Hit-Zone he found interest in the sport again and quickly connected to the Pro scene. Due to an injury to Card, Marshall was also without a partner, so the team came together at the beginning of last season and was already able to beat „Double Clutch“ in the finals of a tournament in California. They finished third at Nationals.
The teams have met five times so far, almost always in the finals. Also at the first „Major“ tournament of this season in San Francisco, the final was „Double Clutch“ versus „Assistive Touch.“ The matchup gains depth from the teams‘ different styles of play and size difference. Murthy and Hinkle are both rather smaller and rely mainly on their powerful serves, while „Assistive Touch“ considers itself a defense team. In San Francisco, „Double Clutch“ once again came out on top, so the total matchup is now 3-2. So we can look forward to further encounters between the two during the course of the season.
There is also a new star in the women’s Roundnet sky. In the last years the „Twinz“, Olivia and Ali Jenki, dominated the ladies tournaments. This season, however, the team „Biggie Smalls“ is attracting attention. The team name here refers to the size difference between the two team partners. In a close final, Alli Foster and Katie Pierson also won the major tournament in San Francisco. Last year, the two faced each other in the quarterfinals of the Nationals and this year, as a newly formed team, they have now won the last three tournaments of the Tour Series. The big clash with the Twinz is still to come and then we will see whether „Biggie Smalls“ can challenge the throne.
