Dear Roundnet enthusiasts,
in the past three months since our last statement on the founding of the International Roundnet Federation (IRF), the first talks with some National Federations have taken place and we have also exchanged views with the IRF Board. After extensive discussions we have also been accepted into the circle of „members“ and are looking forward to the first meeting of the worldwide Roundnet associations and organisations scheduled for 8 March.
We are looking forward to the exchange and are curious to see what adjustments will be made to the structure in the near future – the IRF board has promised us a change towards more co-determination and democracy. But now words must be followed by deeds!
We as Roundnet Germany e.V. will continue to stand up for the development of the sport of Roundnet with all our strength, so that democratic structures are created rather tomorrow than the day after tomorrow, which give all National Federations equal voting rights. The time communicated to us by the IRF a few months ago, namely that it would not deal with this issue until the World Championships in September 2021 at the earliest, is in our eyes far too late – in light of the fact that the IRF would then already have existed for almost a year without any visible development steps. Due to the cancellation of the 2021 World Championship and the resulting loss of a possible physical meeting, it is now even more important to find an agreement on digital ways in a timely manner.
We would like to encourage all national representatives to deal with the issue of the early establishment of a democratic and independent world federation and to address this at the meeting on 8 March! This is the only way for the sport itself to grow.
Another important point we would like to make at this point, is the issue of independence within the organisation. This can only be guaranteed if decisions within the association of all kinds can be made with the best possible development of the sport being the number one priority, whilst being independent of profit-oriented companies or other influences. This independence is, incidentally, an essential criteria for achieving the long-term goal of inclusion in the Olympic Games, as the International Olympic Committee has a special eye on this.
The Spikeball Roundnet Association (SRA), which has in a sense been acting as a world federation until now, has restructured itself and from now on serves as an exclusive ambassador programme of Spikeball Inc. For this purpose, the IRF was founded as an „independent and non-profit group“ (quote from the SRA website).
We are pleased about this step, but unfortunately have doubts with the current composition of the IRF board, which currently elects itself, that decisions can be made independently of corporate interests of Spikeball Inc. Especially as the IRF does not provide for any control bodies or mechanisms and the National Associations have no possibility whatsoever to influence events by voting them out of office, to influence what is happening.
The current board has, to our knowledge, at least two employees of Spikeball Inc. in its ranks. For example, Jack Scotti has been employed in various (management) positions since 2016 and was or is also on the board of the previously mentioned SRA. Thus, the IRF, now presented as independent, is started at least in part by the same people who have been and continue to be pursuing a commercial establishment of the Spikeball brand with the SRA. We see, of course, that the work at Spikeball does not exclude the devotion of individuals to the sport, or can even represent it, but in this context all the more attention must be paid to a democratically elected representation of the world federation in the future.
We all know what a big part Spikeball Inc. has played in the development of the sport and we are happy about their strong commitment in the last years! We do not want to reject a partnership between the IRF and Spikeball, e.g. as sponsor/supplier – also because Spikeball currently produces the best Roundnet material from our point of view. It only has to be ensured that other developments or improvements in the near future are not hindered by a dependency. This would hinder the development of the sport in the long term and put the brakes on ambitious goals such as Olympic participation.

Liebe Roundnet-Freund*innen,
In den vergangenen drei Monaten seit unserem letzten Statement zur Gründung der International Roundnet Federation (IRF) haben die ersten Gespräche mit einigen Nationalen Verbänden stattgefunden und auch wir haben uns mit dem IRF-Vorstand ausgetauscht. Nach ausführlichen Gesprächen sind auch wir in den Kreis der “Mitglieder” aufgenommen worden und sind gespannt auf das für den 8. März angesetzte erste Meeting der weltweiten Roundnet-Verbände und -Organisationen.
Wir freuen uns auf den Austausch und sind gespannt, welche zeitnahen Änderungen in der Struktur geschaffen werden sollen – eine Änderung hin zu mehr Mitbestimmung wurde uns seitens des IRF-Vorstands zugesagt. Jetzt müssen den Worten aber auch Taten folgen!
Wir als Roundnet Germany e.V. werden im Sinne der Entwicklung des Roundnetsports weiterhin mit aller Kraft dafür einstehen, dass besser morgen als übermorgen demokratische Strukturen geschaffen werden, die allen Nationalen Verbänden ein gleichberechtigtes Stimmrecht einräumen. Der von der IRF uns gegenüber vor einigen Monaten kommunizierte Zeitpunkt, sich frühestens bei der Weltmeisterschaft im September 2021 damit auseinanderzusetzen, ist in unseren Augen viel zu spät – angesichts der Tatsache, dass die IRF dann bereits seit knapp einem Jahr ohne sichtbare Entwicklungsschritte existieren würde. Durch die Absage der WM 2021 und den daraus resultierenden Wegfall eines möglichen physischen Treffens ist es nun umso wichtiger zeitnah eine Einigung über digitale Wege zu finden.
Wir möchten alle nationalen Vertreter*innen dazu ermutigen sich mit der Thematik der frühzeitigen Etablierung eines demokratischen und unabhängigen Weltverbands auseinanderzusetzen und dies auf dem Treffen am 8. März anzusprechen! Denn nur so kann die Sportart an sich weiter wachsen.
Einen weiteren wichtigen Punkt auf den wir an dieser Stelle hinweisen möchten, ist das Thema der Unabhängigkeit innerhalb der Organisation. Diese kann nur gewährleistet sein, wenn Entscheidungen jeder Art im Verband im Sinne der bestmöglichen Entwicklung der Sportart und unabhängig von profitorientierten Unternehmen oder anderen Einflüssen getroffen werden kann. Diese Unabhängigkeit ist ganz nebenbei ein essentielles Kriterium, um das Fernziel der Aufnahme in die Olympischen Spiele überhaupt erreichen zu können, da das Internationale Olympische Komitee hierauf ein besonderes Auge hat.
Die bisher als “quasi” Weltverband agierende Spikeball Roundnet Assiciation (SRA) hat sich umstrukturiert und dient fortan als ausschließliches Ambassador-Programm der Firma Spikeball Inc. Dafür wurde die IRF als “unabhängiger und gemeinnütziger” Zusammenschluss gegründet (Zitat von der SRA website).
Wir freuen uns über diesen Schritt, aber haben bei der aktuellen Besetzung des sich aktuell selbst-wählenden IRF-Vorstands leider Bedenken, dass Entscheidungen unabhängig von Firmeninteressen von Spikeball Inc. getroffen werden können. Besonders auch da Kontrollgremien und -mechanismen in der IRF bisher nicht vorgesehen sind und die Nationalen Verbände keinerlei Möglichkeit haben durch Abwahl etc. Einfluss auf die Geschehnisse zu nehmen.
Der aktuelle Vorstand hat, nach unserem Wissensstand, mindestens zwei Angestellte der Firma Spikeball Inc. in seinen Reihen. Beispielsweise ist Jack Scotti seit 2016 in verschiedenen (Führungs-)Positionen angestellt und war oder ist außerdem im Vorstand der vorher schon erwähnten SRA. Somit wird die jetzt als unabhängig dargestellte IRF zumindest teilweise von den gleichen Leuten gestartet, die mit der SRA bisher und auch weiterhin eine wirtschaftliche Etablierung der Marke Spikeball verfolgen. Wir sehen natürlich, dass die Arbeit bei Spikeball nicht die Hingabe einzelner Personen zum Sport ausschließt, oder diese sogar repräsentieren kann, jedoch muss vor diesem Kontext umso mehr auf eine demokratisch gewählte Repräsentation des Weltverbands in der Zukunft geachtet werden.
Wir alle wissen, welch großen Anteil die Firma Spikeball Inc. an der Entwicklung der Sportart hat und sind froh über das starke Engagement in den letzten Jahren! Ein partnerschaftliches Verhältnis von IRF und Spikeball bspw. als Sponsor/Ausstatter möchten wir keinesfalls ablehnen – auch da Spikeball aktuell auch aus unserer Sicht das beste Roundnet-Material herstellt. Es muss nur gewährleistet sein, dass andere Entwicklungen/Verbesserungen/Strömungen in der nächsten Zeit nicht von einer zu engen Abhängigkeit verhindert werden. Das würde die Entwicklung der Sportart langfristig behindern und ambitionierte Ziele wie die Olympia-Teilnahme ausbremsen.
